Settle

We settle in.
We settle down.
We settle for.
We settle up.
We settle in so many
    subtle ways.
 
We ask for more.
We settle for less.
We bargain in.
We make a mess.
We walk around
    haughty confess,
unsettled.
 
We think there is
    nothing we
can do.

The winds of change
    move with us too.
But when we look
    so carefully,
what is it we are
             settling?
 
For in the word
    itself is true,
nothing more
    not one word, two.
In, down, for, up,
    they alone mean not,
but together they are
                    settling.
 
Alone it means
    whatever we wish,
but added to these,
    a tasty dish!
A motion, a movement,
    a direction it seems.
We settle in
    to settling.
 
So are you settling down
    or settling in?
Are you settling for
    or up to win?
We settle in so many
    ways.
What we see
    is what we say.
 
Look for the path
    nearest you.
For we are simply
    one word too.
It’s what is next to us
    that pushes or pulls.
It is where we live, work,
    love, play, do,
that clarifies who we are too.
 
Look around.
What is it you
       are settling?
